Mickey 17

‘Mickey 17’ is Bong Joon-ho’s latest science fiction film, starring Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes. The film explores themes of cloning, corporate exploitation, and survival in a hostile environment.

The film’s visuals are one of its strongest aspects, with a futuristic and otherworldly atmosphere that fits the sci-fi genre. I loved the bold, contrasting colors creates a sense of isolation on the planet Nilfheim, while the cinematography captures both the vastness and the claustrophobia of the characters’ environment.

I thought the cast was great particularly Robert Pattinson. The psychological complexity of Mickey is a central element of the film and Pattinson was able to bring a mix of vulnerability, frustration, and defiance to the character.

The action scenes are dynamic and visually compelling. There are echoes of 2001: A Space Odyssey in the use of space and time, as well as references to more modern sci-fi films, all filtered through Bong’s distinct vision thereby creating a unique blend of nostalgia and innovation.

Mickey 17 uses color not just to build its visual world but to underline the psychological and emotional states of its characters. The color red, in particular, pops in key moments signifying danger, urgency, or the idea of blood and life. Additionally, the orange and red hues sometimes contrast against the cold landscape, perhaps eluding to moments of crisis or emotional intensity.
