The 2025 reboot of I’ Know What You Did Last Summer’ attempts to revive the iconic slasher franchise with a blend of nostalgia and modern horror flair – I think it was decent but certainly not better than the OG.
While Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. return to add emotional weight and continuity, I think the film struggles to balance its legacy with a new cast and storyline. The plot follows a familiar structure with young adults hiding a deadly secret but leans too heavily on past formulas without bringing enough fresh energy.
The cinematography is polished but ultimately conventional. It leans into a dark, moody palette that reflects the film’s slasher roots, with heavy use of shadows, rainy backdrops, and coastal fog to evoke tension. The night scenes are competently lit, offering that glossy horror-movie sheen, but they rarely elevate the suspense. Flashbacks are often desaturated or blurred to signal memory or trauma, a technique that feels overused rather than impactful. While the framing is clean and the kill sequences are visually sharp, there’s little experimentation or visual storytelling that deepens the atmosphere or characters. It’s functional and stylish in moments.
Some fans will appreciate the slick production and a twist-filled finale, there is inconsistent pacing, underdeveloped characters, and scares that lack tension. Check it out if you are a fan of the OG but don’t see it as a knockout.
